Book Two of the Stairway to Forever Series

By Robert Adams

For a poor, down-on-his luck ex-Marine, Fitz was doing OK.

It all started when "Fitz" Fitzgilbert tumbled down a certain Stairway to Forever—and found himself in another world. At first it had seemed a world that offered only infinite loneliness, a world of nothing but ocean, sand and inland desert. But before long this "empty" world had granted Fitz incredible wealth, the love of a beautiful soulmate, godlike telepathic and telekinetic powers—in short, a life of pure and joyful adventure.

But the time of play is ending now. The Elder Gods who called him to this world grow impatient for Fitz to take up the burdens of kinship for which they have summoned him. And though he loves the life he has been living, and does not want to be a king, Fitz learns that for him there is no choice: he must live as a king if he is to live at all.

"Hungry, Zeus?"

"Not for food," the half-breed god replied. "Instead of eating a deer, I shall become a bull." As Fitz mind-watched, the blond young man was slowly transformed into a wild ox, one of a giant breed that in some distant future humans would call aurochs. The young bull set out across the rolling plain, leaving his sister to her bloody feast.

The man-bull sensed a flicker of motion and lifted his dripping muzzle from the stream, but before he could bellow his awful challenge he caught full sight of the creature on the rock above him, a stunningly beautiful human female. So much did the lissome form arouse the man within the bull that the hybrid mind let slip its control.

As for the girl, the cold trembling fear of the aurochs was swiftly lost in an all-consuming awe that left her unable to move as she witnessed the god's transformation from beast to tall and fair young man. It was not in Zeus's nature to resist such a temptation...
