The Golden King
Winner of the 2005 EPPIE for Best Historical Novel!

Set in the lands of the ancient Scythians, this second volume of the Lion of Scythia trilogy tumbles the reader into bloody warfare between the tribes. The chief of the tribe is dead, killed by his son's treachery; and the priestess, the lover of the young Macedonian cavalry officer, Nikometros, is carried off into the mountains. While the new chief strengthens his authority, Nikometros and his friends set off in pursuit of the priestess.
Death rides with them and by the time they return, the tribes are at war. Battle follows battle as Nikometros and the friends and allies he has won among the tribes strive to overthrow the new chief. The lines between friend and enemy become blurred as Nikometros is faced with the choice of becoming chief himself or leaving the people he has come to love and respect, returning to his duty as an army officer.

5 Angels! The Golden King is not a light read, but a fairly intense study of the way ancient armies may have lived and worshipped. Their fidelities were constantly changing, whenever their leader decided that it gave them a better chance of survival. The battle and combat scenes are gruesome, with wounds described fairly precisely. One of the minor players turns into a force to be reckoned with, and his impact kept me reading deep into the night as the action stepped up. Although not for the feint-hearted, The Golden King is a compelling tale of mythological proportions. I look forward to reading the last of the trilogy, Funeral in Babylon to see the final act of Nikometros and Tomyra played out. —Naomi, Fallen Angel Reviews
8.5 Gargoyles! The Golden King majestically illuminates a time in history that was characterized by contrasts, conflicts and wholehearted commitments. The reader will be fascinated at how life and death walked side by side in this novel. The Golden King is a shining example of historical fiction! —Joyce Handzo, In the Library Reviews
Ladies and Gentlemen, Max Overton is officially an auto buy for me. I don't need to know the genre or even what the story is about. I know that if it has Max Overton on the book I'm guaranteed an excellent read filled with action packed adventure and emotional involvement. What more can a reader ask for? Lion of Scythia is an intriguing page turner not for the faint of heart. This story is very tragic but I feel that Max captured that part of history and all it's harsh ways. This reviewer is very upset about the horror that Tomyra is subjected to at the end of the story and the way Max ended it left me in tears. I should also mention that Max is a little devil and the way he ended the story will leave you gasping for more. I believe my exact words were . . . "You can't do this to me! Is the next story released yet?" This story is continued in The Golden King and this reviewer will be sure to read it. I need to know to fate of Nikomentros and Tomyra and how strong their love really is. Max, as always, you did a marvelous job! —Jill, Fallen Angel Reviews.
