Resa Nelson
Resa Nelson has been the TV/movie columnist of Realms of Fantasy magazine since 1999. She is also a regular contributor to SCI FI magazine and has written nonfiction articles for a wide range of publications, including Amazing Stories, Boys' Life, Lupus Now, and Massachusetts Wildlife. She attended the Clarion Science Fiction Writers Workshop in 1985 and is a longtime member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). Her short fiction has been published in Science Fiction Age, Fantasy Magazine, Aboriginal SF, Tomorrow SF, Brutarian Quarterly, Paradox, Oceans of the Mind, and several anthologies. The Dragonslayer's Sword is based on two stories originally published in Science Fiction Age: "The Dragonslayer's Sword" and "The Silver Shoes."
While researching The Dragonslayer's Sword, Nelson took a course in blacksmithing, where she learned how to build a fire and forge iron and steel. She also took a course to learn how to use a medieval sword at the Higgins Armory Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts. She soon joined the Higgins Armory Sword Guild and took more courses in German longsword and Italian rapier and dagger. She also studied foil fencing for a year. Nelson participates in the guild's study of fight manuals from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and participates in demonstrations of historically accurate sword techniques at the Higgins Armory Museum, science fiction and fantasy conventions, and other venues in New England. The swordwork in this novel is based on her study of these techniques.
Nelson has also studied screenplay writing and participated in the making of three short independent films, two of which are based on her short stories. She has been a quarter-finalist in the Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting and a semi-finalist in the Chesterfield screenwriting contest. She lives in Massachusetts.
