About Margaret L. Carter

Marked for life by reading DRACULA at the age of twelve, Margaret L. Carter has specialized throughout her career in fantasy and the supernatural, especially vampires. Earning degrees in English from the College of William and Mary, the University of Hawaii, and the University of California (Irvine), she wrote her dissertation on the Gothic novel, with sections on CARMILLA and DRACULA. It was published as SPECTER OR DELUSION: THE SUPERNATURAL IN GOTHIC FICTION. Her first novel, SHADOW OF THE BEAST, features a werewolf who works at the author's day job, as a proofreader for the Maryland state legislature.

Vampire novels include DARK CHANGELING (2000 Eppie Award winner in Horror), CHILD OF TWILIGHT (its sequel, an Eppie Award finalist in Horror in 2004), SEALED IN BLOOD, and CRIMSON DREAMS. Combining her focus on relationships and getting inside the mind of the "monster" with her lifelong devotion to horror and fantasy, she has branched into paranormal romance with SEALED IN BLOOD and CRIMSON DREAMS. From romance publisher Ellora's Cave, she has three vampire novellas, "Night Flight," "Tall, Dark, and Deadly," and "Virgin Blood" (a vampire adaptation of "Rapunzel"), as well as a "Quickie" story, "New Flame," and a short novel, DRAGON'S TRIBUTE.

For ten years she edited a fanzine, THE VAMPIRE'S CRYPT, containing a comprehensive book review column in every issue, interviews with vampire authors including Suzy McKee Charnas, Elaine Bergstrom, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and many others, and early stories by such writers as Gemma Files, Nancy Kilpatrick, and Edo van Belkom. All 25 issues remain available from the distributor (information is on her website).

Scholarly work on vampirism in literature includes THE VAMPIRE IN LITERATURE: A CRITICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY and DIFFERENT BLOOD: THE VAMPIRE AS ALIEN, as well as a number of articles, including an essay in the anthology SEVEN SEASONS OF BUFFY (published in 2003 by Ben Bella Books). Her short stories have appeared in various anthologies and small press publications, most recently "Late Blooming" in Marion Zimmer Bradley's SWORD AND SORCERESS 20.

With her husband, retired Navy Captain Leslie Roy Carter, she has published a fantasy novel, WILD SORCERESS. They are at work on the sequel. They have four sons, several grandchildren, a St. Bernard named Frodo, and assorted cats.
